Grace Episcopal Church (Freeport, Ill)

Originally started by Philander Chase, this is one of the oldest churches in Illinois. It was originally named Zion Parish Episcopal Church in 1850. The church was consecrated in 1953 and the name was changed to Grace around 1889. The present church is in the third building with the two previous having been destroyed.

Established May 19, 1851, on the northwest corner of Dearborn and Madison streets. The church was moved to Peck Court and Wabash streets in 1857. In 1867, the need for a larger church caused a new building to be built on Wabash Avenue between fourteenth and fifteenth streets. On September 26, 1915, Grace Episcopal Church burnt to the ground. For the next ten years, worship was conducted in the Parish House. In 1928, a new church building was erected at 1450 S. Indiana Avenue. The church moved again in 1966 to its current church building at 33 West Jackson Street.

In the Journal of the Diocese of Quincy as an unorganized mission from 1915-1927. No annual report and no other information is available about this church. In 1854, in a one-room schoolhouse, fourteen persons met with the second Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Illinois to establish a church in Bowling Township. The first frame church building was built some years later. It was closed and torn down in 1920.
