Founded in January 1857 in a borrowed church on the corner of LaSalle and Erie Streets by parishioners from Saint James Episcopal Church. It was officially admitted to the diocesan convention in 1858. In 1865, the church acquired a building at LaSalle and Elm Streets. Burned to the ground during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, parishioners saved only the stone baptismal and a large silver chalice and paten. The church was rebuilt in 1873 and dedicated in 1874.
